If summer and rock & roll were put in a blender, it would make a Sun Room song. The surf-rock band comes to Detroit straight from sunny Southern California on The Jacknife Tour, off the release of their newest EP, Ritual of Chaos. I’ve seen this band a few times now and every show they put on is full of pure energy. It may not have been a sold out show but Sun Room had everyone in that room grooving along to their songs.

The night started out with West 22nd opening, an indie-rock band from Austin Texas. Right from the start, fans were moving with the music and singing along to the hits. The band had great energy and stage presence as they jumped and ran across the stage, and even into the crowd at one point. Their set featured their popular cover of “Charleston Girl” by Tyler Childers, which was on repeat for me all summer long, “Sunburns”, finally closing with “Virginia Highlands”. After their set they were eager to meet fans by the merch booth to say hi and take photos.

As soon as Sun Room stepped out on the stage at El Club on Monday, the crowd was roaring until the end of the night. Their set was packed with hit after hit, older songs and newer songs with a quick introduction for each one. They even played an incredibly unique cover of “Fade into You” by Mazzy Star that had the whole crowd singing. While introducing the band, bass player Max Pinamonti wowed the crowd by reciting the alphabet backwards. Closing the set with flashing lights and fast beats during "Cadillac", after fans demanded for one more song.

For anyone interested in seeing Sun Room this fall, you’re in luck! Their tour isn’t over yet so get your tickets while you can in a city near you. Both of these bands are definitely ones to keep on your radar and I would never pass up an opportunity to catch their show.
