“77 years that we get in a life / 77 times that we get to try to be truthful” are some of the lyrics Tennessee-based, indie-rock band, Colony House sings in the titular track on their most recent 77 album. I was lucky enough to watch them perform during their 77 Tour Pt. 1 in Orlando, Florida, at the House of Blues.

The Greeting Committee, also an indie-rock band, opened the night with songs that got the crowd dancing from the get-go. It was the first night they joined Colony House on the tour as support, and the two bands together are a fantastic pair that makes for a great night. The lead singer of The Greeting Committee commented on the crowd at the show. “You guys are all so attentive,” Maddie praised. She noted that they didn’t have a drummer that night, so instead of doing their “usual shtick” of running all around the stage, they were trying to lean into their favorite part of making music: connecting with people. That they did, as fans from the barricade to the back of the house were into it. The band ended their set with an upbeat song that many people sang along with.

Connecting with people was the theme of the night. Colony House came on stage and brought with them incredible energy. Within the first few songs, lead singer Caleb jumped onto the barricade, getting support from the fans standing there, and jumped over it, waving and hugging people he passed. That was when I knew I was in for a wild ride. It was easy to tell that not only did this band care about the music, but about each fan as well. Twice more throughout the night, Caleb headed into the crowd, continuously making connections with the audience as he danced and sang with them. He also performed from a makeshift B-stage by the sound booth, performing more acoustically to the song “Moving Forward” from a previous record.

Another of my favorite moments from the night was “What’s It Gonna Take” from the 77 album, a song about the tumultuous state of the world perpetuated by the people in power, which leaves us feeling helpless. It was accompanied by a banner on stage asking the same question, and it really spoke to the heart and care that Colony House puts into the music. The band was incredible at moving from more anthemic ballads to fast-paced alternative sounds; each had the crowd singing the lyrics from their soul or jumping around. The energy from the crowd was infectious. If anyone walked in as a casual listener or just happened to be there on a whim, they were sure to leave a fan. I know I did.
