Brotherkenzie at The Moroccan Lounge

A quiet hum, a heart on a sleeve, and bodies softly swaying — the room mirrors the music on a slow Los Angeles night for Brotherkenzie. Nathan Stocker, Minnesota-based singer-songwriter best known for his career within indie strongholds Hippo Campus, has been showcasing his solo skillset under the name Brotherkenzie since his debut Carver in 2016. North Star marks his seventh album release, and it arrives openly as a solidification of his musical prowess. From playing, to singing, to composing, to producing, looking into his discography showcases his talent and dedication to not only music as an art form, but as a way of feeling. Being no stranger to the stage, he’s transitioned this emotional guiding light into this current summer run without fail.
Dirt Buyer, arriving from New York by way of indie rock, opened the show with a heartfelt solo set. Manning only a guitar, lead vocalist Joe Sutkowski’s voice captured all four walls of The Moroccan Lounge freely. Guttural, prayerful tones hit alongside the deep red stage lights. “Josephine” from their debut album highlighted the natural need that lives in Sutkowski’s voice: “Josephine / You're the star of the show / Everybody but you knows”. Roaming around the same sonic family as Horse Jumper of Love and Joyce Manor, it almost places Dirt Buyer in my hometown sound of Midwest emo, but with a softer twist. Regardless of roots, Dirt Buyer’s raw and honest delivery was a beautiful segue into what Brotherkenzie was positioned to bring to the stage.
Oscillating between his earlier sound of gritty acoustics, his current bold folk arc, and his indie rock roots, Brotherkenzie’s set truthfully encapsulated the world he’s built through his music. From one of his most popular tracks, “Stick Around,” to “Lion’s Den” from North Star, the constant was his longing and distinctive vocals. "This is everything you've been looking for / This is everything you've been needing / This is everything that you want and more / But you can't trust that feeling”, “Lion’s Den” calls out as a pointed declaration. This steadfast honesty, both vocally and lyrically, keeps the sound grounded and tangible.
In line with fellow indie artists like Field Medic and Runnner, Brotherkenzie is unwavering in vulnerability by sharing parts of himself with the crowd through his music. As the show wrapped and an encore was demanded, he stepped back in front of The Moroccan Lounge disco balls to speak on what it means to share a moment of his music with the people who made it out, and what community can build from that. Closing out with the tenderhearted “Heaven in a Glass” from his album Ditto, the evening concluded with a poignant reminder that “the beauty of life carries on”.
