So much time, in fact, (168 days… you can count them by album…) I’m doing two check-ins at once. This hand-picked lineup of fifteen records, includes festival favorites like Slayyyter and Ninajirachi, indie rock collaboratives Feeble Little Horse and Villagerrr, and the grand return of Phoebe Bridgers! LISTEN #136: WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA - SLAYYYTER

Imagine the dirtiest house party you’ve ever been to, confined in the narrow halls of a beat-up double-wide, where the air is thick with smoke (and reeks of other substances, where the men smell just as bad as they look. You’ve lost your friends at some point in the night, been out so long the sun is rising, and yet the party shows no signs of stopping, thanks to the bumps that were offered to you by the almost too-friendly man sitting next to you. Welcome to a night out as the WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA. St. Louis native Catherine Garner, who has performed under the name Slayyyter since 2016, thought her career was over before she signed to Columbia Records and released her third studio album, WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA, in the spring of this year. Today, that statement couldn’t be further from the truth. Known for combining razor-sharp electronic production with eclectic influences and brash lyricism about sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA paints an unflinching and honest portrait of life through Garner’s eyes– from growing up in the tranquility of the Midwest and being suddenly thrust into pop stardom, to St. Louis’ raunchy party scene, and even surviving the demise of her long-term relationship with producer Charlie Shuffler due to an affair she discovered two days before her Coachella debut (where she pulled a crowd so large it was practically unheard of for the first set of the day), WGIA and its upcoming companion record WOR$T MAN IN AMERICA have something for all listeners to enjoy. Featuring songs steeped in cinematic references like “CRANK” (named after the opening montage of the 2002 film Spun where a narrator describes numerous ways to use methamphetamine), and “BRITTANY MURPHY” (where Slayyyter likens herself to the tragic fate of the late actress), Garner doesn’t shy away from explicit lyrics about drug use and sex that may offend conservative listeners. Slayyyter got her start as a completely DIY artist and has never abandoned those principles, choosing to direct her own music videos, construct her own costumes, and produce her “OLD TECHNOLOGY” music video on a $0 budget, despite having the support of a major label. New fans of EDM and hyperpop should stay for the variety of genre references hidden inside, including hip-hop, metal, punk, and more. Today, Slayyyter’s career uncertainties feel like a distant daydream, as she is currently embarking on a sold-out world tour and has doubled the size of her crowds at each of her summer festival appearances, pulling an estimated 50k at Lollapalooza, one of the biggest crowds of the entire festival, and recently scored her first entry to the Billboard Hot 100 with the single “brand new chanel$.”

LISTEN #143: DOWN IN HEAVEN (10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION) - TWIN PEAKS

In the ten years since the initial release of Down In Heaven, life has changed quite a bit for the dudes in Twin Peaks. Since their debut in 2010, the band has developed a sound that combines ‘60s garage rock and 2010s indie sleaze, earning them a reputation as one of Chicago’s most beloved alternative bands with a kickass live set. Released alongside an eight-night, completely sold-out run at Chicago’s Thalia Hall, Down In Heaven (10th Anniversary Edition) showcases the songs longtime fans know and love, while also exhibiting b-sides and bonus tracks. The 10th anniversary record is perfect for longtime fans looking for a healthy dose of nostalgia and newcomers in search of a refreshing yet familiar sound.

LISTEN #146: BITKNOT - FEEBLE LITTLE HORSE

Quickly going down as one of my favorite records released this year after a single listen, Bitknot marks a triumphant and surprising return after an equally surprising hiatus for Pittsburgh-based DIY noise-rockers Feeble Little Horse. Surprise-released with zero prior announcement in May of this year after a hiatus that began in late 2024, everything about Feeble Little Horse sounds bigger and bolder on Bitknot, despite the departure of guitarist Ryan Walchonski during their break. On Bitknot, Feeble Little Horse combines electric digital production with aggressive guitars and the distortion of shoegaze, grounding their sound in complete juxtapositions that make their music endlessly engaging and surprising. The turmoil and change have allowed the remaining trio of members to discover their sound with an explosion of creativity, as the group explores alt-rock on “Poison,” dream-pop on “Paris,” and continues to further their juxtaposition between instrumentation and production on stand-out tracks like “Dior” and “DMT.”

LISTEN #148: CAROUSEL - VILLAGERRR

The world’s friendliest band from Columbus, Ohio, is having one hell of a year. Fresh off the release of their 2026 record Carousel, Villagerrr has already completed a headlining run across the UKand a co-headline touring leg across the interior of the United States with Burlington-based Dari Bay, and the group still has their eyes set on the road as they prepare for a North American tour supporting Chicago indie rockers Friko before heading back across the pond for a full band headline tour across Europe. On Carousel, Villagerrr expands on their pre-established alternative country sound, combining strumming guitars, electronic distortion, and the hum of pedal steel to create a sound that is dreamlike, inviting, and relaxing. Beginning as a solo songwriting and recording project for Mark Scott in 2022, the ensemble has expanded to a fluctuating group of musicians, sometimes including up to 6 instrumentalists. Fans of Scott’s soft vocals and melancholic storytelling will want to stick around for the richly textured soundscapes: Scott plays nearly all instrumentals on the recorded tracks, and songs like “Crystal Ball,” “Gleam,” and “Swimming” highlight Scott’s sound layering and instrumental techniques, where each listen leads you to discover something new.

LISTEN #153: STATUS UPDATE MUSIC - LEROY

Released under her alter ego “leroy” and released exclusively via SoundCloud and Bandcamp, status update music is an eccentric collection of genre-blurring DJ tracks from the experimental electronic and digicore artist Jane Remover. A dopamine-fueled frenzy, each track features countless samples that could never be cleared for Top 40 radio, with the final sample count reaching over 150. Described as “my life as I lived it from May 2025 to May 2026”, status update music serves as a digital diary for Jane Remover and is not for listeners who are faint of heart. The year was a period of intense personal change for them, as they were seen supporting Turnstile across the US before embarking on her own headlining Live Exhibit tours across Europe and North America. It is easy for the listener to get lost in the inundation of sounds and samples across status update music, with tracks like “XO TOUR LIF3” (bearing no relation to the 2017 Lil Uzi Vert song) and “NOTHING LASTS FOREVER (EVERY DETAIL U EVER TOLD ME)” guaranteed to keep the listener on their toes across the album’s hour-and-seven-minute-runtime.

LISTEN #178: YOUR DAY WILL COME (2026) - CHANEL BEAD

Chanel Beads mastermind Shane Lavers surprised fans and new listeners alike when he announced his upcoming record Your Day Will Come in April of this year, bearing the same name as his 2024 breakthrough debut. If anything, Your Day Will Come (2026) is not a repetition of the richly-layered electronic soundscapes that brought him success, but rather an expansion of them. Employing a method of composition popularized in the latter quarter of the twentieth century known as “fake jazz,” Lavers pioneers a dreamy sound focused on the juxtaposition of real and digital instruments, a surreal and hazy sound that sounds almost as if Lavers is guiding the listener through a dream or hallucination. Shifting between melancholic, new wave influences and sudden bursts of punk-adjacent intensity, the project of Chanel Beads remains endlessly captivating, with discoveries and idiosyncrasies hidden inside every listen.

LISTEN #181: SURPRISE WISH - DARI BAY

Originally starting as the solo songwriting project of Zack James, the music of Dari Bay is entirely created by him in the studio before being recreated live by a host of musicians. Combining slacker rock with lo-fi indie-pop, James’ project creates a sound that is methodical, precise, optimistic, and full of fuzzy guitar distortion. Though the project has been playing for nearly a decade, the group’s debut album, Surprise Wish released in the summer of this year, following a compilation of previously recorded tracks released in 2025. Dari Bay recently finished a co-headlining run with Ohio’s Villagerrr and will be supporting Squirrel Flower on the road later this fall.

LISTEN #190: PHANTASTIC FERNATURE - PHANTASTIC FERNATURE

Fans eagerly awaiting the release of Julia Jacklin’s upcoming record The Gem may be thrilled to discover they can hear her smooth vocals and jazz-like sensibilities on Phantastic Fernature, the self-titled debut record from the group composed of longtime friends and collaborators of Jacklin, Liz Hughes, Ryan K, Brennan, and Tom Stephens. Phantastic Fernature provides a twist on Jacklin’s familiar dreamy and intimate sound, beefing up her stripped-down instrumentation for a garage-rock-inspired sound. After a several-year-long hiatus following the release of their self-titled debut album, the band reappeared in 2025 with the release of singles “Change My Mind” and “Dare To Fall In Love”

LISTEN #205: MUSIC, FASHION, FILM - CHARLI XCX

After the release of Wuthering Heights, the soundtrack she composed for Emerald Fennell’s less-than-faithful adaptation of the classic novel of the same name. Charli XCX claimed she was going to take a break from music to focus on other mediums of creativity. But inspiration struck in the Spring of this year, leading to the release of Music, Fashion, Film in the lead-up to her headlining performance at Lollapalooza. Music, Fashion, Film is a stark abandonment of the electronic hyperpop that skyrocketed her into pop stardom with Brat, favoring distorted, guitar-driven melodies that place a newfound emphasis on her vocals and lyricism. The eleven-track album coincides with a visual album with footage for every track, as well as exclusive B-sides only available on the physical release.

LISTEN #219: TWO WHEELS MOVE THE SOUL - ROBBER ROBBER

I originally met bassist and vocalist Nina Cates of Robber Robber when she came through Chicago playing a co-headline run with Villagerrr as part of Zack James’ Dari Bay, and I quickly fell in love with the experimental sound of Robber Robber. Combining experimental indie rock with post-punk influences, Robber Robber blends noisy guitars with earworm-like pop hooks to create a sound that is layered, precise, and fearlessly bold. Fans of offbeat grooves and ethereal vocals will quickly find themselves lost in the soundscapes created by Cates and co on the group’s sophomore effort, Two Wheels Move The Soul.

LISTEN #222: SOMETHING IS HAPPENING… - GUPPY

Originally formed while the members were students at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, the members of the almost-indefinable rock band Guppy now reside in sunny Los Angeles, California. Over the years, many people have tried to pigeonhole the group into various genres like power pop and garage punk; the members themselves define their sound as “prom rock”: a sound characterized by layering rapid-fire, witty lyricism and energetic melodies over blaring guitars. Guppy’s fourth studio album Something is Happening…, released in 2024, is a further exploration of their signature sound.

LISTEN #226: LOST WEEKEND - PHOEBE BRIDGERS

The Queen is back… and she needs no introduction. Phoebe Bridgers sparked excitement and watchful eyes from fans after a series of surprise pop-up shows across the US this spring promoting her then-unreleased third studio album Lost Weekend, providing fans with advance listening of acoustic stylings of select tracks. The only catch? Bridgers has deemed her concerts a phone-free event, asking fans to lock away all recording devices until her performance is over. Bridgers pulled these shows off with shocking success, locking away cameras for a sold-out show at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, looking to do the same at sold-out arenas this fall. Lost Weekend takes its name from many inspirations, like the 1945 Billy Wilder Film about an alcoholic’s fractured bender, John Lennon’s infamous 18-month separation from Yoko Ono, and Bridgers’ own years-long evasion of the public eye following her Grammy wins and nominations with Boygenius in 2024. Through Lost Weekend, Bridgers paints an extremely personal and intimate portrait of grief, love, and loss the way only she can, through cyclical lyrics layered over hazy guitars and a touch of distortion. In an era when confessional singer-songwriters have traded poetics for flashy barbs and fan service, Bridgers provides a breath of fresh air, allowing the listener a peek behind the curtain while simultaneously shrinking behind it.

LISTEN #236: WALLSOCKET (DIRECTOR’S CUT) - UNDERSCORES

For Underscores, genre is not a limiting factor. Broadly defining herself as a hyperpop-influenced artist, Underscores is the DJ/popstar persona of musician April Harper Grey. Wallsocket (Director’s Cut) is the expanded version of her 2023 record, and on it Grey proves almost any genre can be turned into hyperpop given enough modulation, combining metal, punk, and bubblegrunge references across the sprawling project, which features collaborations from frequent flyers Gabby Start and Jane Remover.

LISTEN #240: NEVER ENOUGH: VERSIONS - TURNSTILE, VARIOUS ARTISTS

Following the release of their 2025 record NEVER ENOUGH, fans of the Baltimore Hardcore legends Turnstile may be beginning to think the band couldn’t become any bigger. After all, the group headlined Primavera Sound, won two GRAMMY Awards, and sold out multiple headline tours across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Then came the release of NEVER ENOUGH VERSIONS, a sprawling reimagination of the band’s breakthrough record spanning multiple genres, proving there’s nowhere the hardcore stalwarts can’t go. Featuring collaborations from familiar faces Chanel Beads, Blood Orange, and Hayley Williams, as well as pop icons and newcomers to the hardcore family, Elton John and Slayyyter, NEVER ENOUGH: VERSIONS is sure to keep the listener on their toes for an endlessly enjoyable listening experience.

LISTEN #242: I LOVE MY COMPUTER - NINAJIRACHI

I first discovered word of EDM/DJ prodigy Ninajirachi in the spring of this year, after boots-on-the-ground journalists (Twitter users) reported festival goers at Coachella were suffering bruises and other minor bodily injuries from moshing too hard in the pit during her set. Immediately, I was intrigued– in an era when so many artists claim dance and electronic music is dead, with artists like Charli XCX abandoning the genre in pursuit of other sounds, how could a young Gen-Z-er keep a crowd so engaged? After attending a surprise pop-up DJ set from contemporary Underscores, I quickly fell down the EDM rabbit hole, enthralled by Ninajirachi’s seamless blending of the nostalgic sounds of 2010s EDM with digital hyperpop. Ninajirachi’s I Love My Computer showcases electronica in the age of the internet with bouncy synths, pitched-up vocals, and maximalist production across an eclectic array of genres.
