Who knew a monday night could be so magical? Holly Humberstone made her way back to Saint Andrew’s Hall in Detroit this week coming off the release of her sophomore album Cruel World. The U.K. based singer-songwriter, has played some of the biggest festivals in the world including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Coachella and most recently Bonnaroo and has notably opened for artists like Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Sam Fender, and Gracie Abrams later this year and is now on the road for a headline tour.

Opener: Diva Smith

Setting the tone for the night ahead, preschool teacher turned singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, Diva Smith shared her catchy-yet-relatable songs and the crowd was attentive every minute of her performance. I can’t imagine that it is easy to go on stage with just an acoustic guitar and sing your songs to a room packed full of people, but Diva executed it flawlessly. There is a quote displayed on her website that I feel perfectly encapsulates what I felt in her music: “I want my music to create a space where people feel safe to get lost. I aspire for my art to be pensive and profound, while also providing a colorful and visual world that people can feel comfortable to think thoroughly about the constant fluctuations between ups and downs in their personal lives.”

After a suspense building intro, Holly Humberstone took the stage and fans roared from the crowd in excitement. Holly shared that she was excited to be back in Detroit after she played this exact room on her 2024 tour in the U.S. It felt like deja vu hearing the crowd sing the same songs as two years ago with just as much emotion as the first time. The first time I heard about Holly was when she opened for Girl in Red in 2022, her performance converted me to a fan that day and I have been following her journey ever since. It has been an absolute pleasure watching her grow up and find even more success each year, and I can’t wait to see where her career goes next. Fans were screaming every word to “Red Chevy” and “White Noise” from her newest album and her older songs that Holly said “can’t take these songs off the setlist quite yet”. Before closing out the set with my personal favorite song of hers, “Scarlett”, she thanked Detroit for making this Monday night so special.

If you are a fan of artists like Gracie Abrams, Masie Peters, or Olivia Rodrigo, I highly recommend checking out Holly Humberstone. Her album Cruel World is out now and you can check out her remaining tour dates on her official website!
