In the midst of the Logan Square Auditorium, with the echo of past indie wrestling matches and weddings hanging in the air, the crowd witnessed not one, but two entrances from Annabelle Dinda. After a false start due to technical difficulties, the 25-year-old TikTok phenomenon and singer-songwriter joyfully ran back on stage to join her band for “Big News Day,” which serves as the opener for her recent album Some Things Never Leave. And with that, we were off.

It was clear both the audience and performers were stoked to be at the auditorium on their Friday night. Dinda jumped up and down and was all smiles when interacting with the crowd, sharing that it was her first time ever in Chicago. As the band moved mostly chronologically through the album, the audience sang along to hits like “Satellite,” seeming to deeply feel self-referential lyrics like “And I make such a deal of using words syllabically / So you're too busy sounding out to shufflе after me.”

Dinda picked up a guitar for the back half of the set and played a couple unreleased songs with promises that they would be out soon. Towards the end, the crowd erupted when she started playing her breakout track “The Hand,” her powerful voice delivering cutting lyrics about the way society elevates men and diminishes women making art. “Every time I open my mouth, I think, "Wow, what a loud noise / Still on the soapbox, just hoping I seem underwhelmed” Dinda sang, hundreds of rapt faces singing the words back to her. And when she briefly forgot the lyrics, the crowd sang even louder, extending a hand.

Annabelle Dinda performed at the Logan Square Auditorium May 15th. She will be back in Chicago opening for Noah Kahan’s sold out shows at Wrigley Field July 14th and 15th. Her new album Some Things Never Leave is available on all streaming platforms.
