Sultry and Sweet: ‘Lips Like Sugar’ Will Leave You Lost in A Daze
Written by Amanda La
In her own words, Déyyess has described the release of her new single ‘Lips Like Sugar’ as a “girl kisser song written by girl kissers about a girl kisser (in denial),” according to her Instagram post about the track. And who am I to argue with that? The song captures the exasperating experience of queer yearning and turns it into an exhilarating tune you can lose yourself to no matter where you are: at home, in a club, or maybe even in the middle of rush hour as you stare longingly out the window, trapped in an enclosed space with nowhere to go until you reach your stop.
At its core, ‘Lips Like Sugar’ is an indie-alt single describing the masochistic yearning experience we’ve all been acquainted with. That pulverizing tension that comes from fantasizing about someone 24/7, only for your euphoria to come crashing down once you realize the crush was unrequited. It’s an achy feeling, but the airiness of her voice envelopes you like a comforting blanket, reassuring you that it’s okay to remain “lost in the pleasure” of fantasy, at least for just a little bit longer.
So if you’re also a girl kisser looking for songs that represent what you’ve been going through, maybe Déyyess can fill that spot for you. With music that unapologetically centers the sapphic experience, she’s certainly carving out her space as a queer artist in the industry. And even if you’re not a girl kisser, ‘Lips Like Sugar,’ and the rest of her growing discography are still worth a listen. Check out her latest releases here.
