Charlie Burg's New Album Brings You "Back To Earth"

Written by Ev Fuss

Singer-Songwriter Charlie Burg has returned with his first full album since 2022, combining his recent EP, Reach, with fresh new tracks that come together to create a soulful pop sound perfect for a fall day. This new album, Back to Earth, is groovy and leans a bit more into the R&B genre than Charlie's past endeavors. The songs are intimate and warm in their instrumentals, with some electronic flourishes, adding texture to the beats.

The album speaks on themes that are common in Charlie's music, just with a quieter and more grounded sound than his other work. He sings about grief, isolation, love, getting older, and feeling creative burnout all through mellow instrumentals that let this emotion really breathe through each song. There is one part of the song “Tasting” which almost encapsulates the themes of the entire album as Charlie sings “I'm the photograph of you I never took / I'm a pack of Vogues / I'm an uncracked joke / I'm the mirror in your eyes.” In these lyrics and the entire track, Charlie speaks on feelings of incompleteness and temporality, especially when being seen through someone else's eyes. He feels that he can only be what others perceive him to be, which I think is something that a lot of people struggle with, but I have never seen it touched on in a way that's almost romantic lyrically. “Lovesong 2” speaks on why Charlie isn’t writing the lovesongs that so often frequented his discography in the past, “And I could try to humor who I was / And feint resentment or pretend I have a grudge / But me and my frustration isn't caused by anyone / And tell me why should I write a love song? / Is it me who I don't love?” The lyrics really do speak for themselves, and the best way to take in this album is by hearing it first hand, produced by Charlie himself, feeling everything that he feels alongside him through these tracks. Other standout tracks include “Upon Arrival,” “On and On,” and “My last words to you,” which, despite the title, is a full instrumental track (which in itself speaks volumes).

Charlie Burg truly poured his soul out in the beautifully crafted eleven tracks that make up Back To Earth. His profound lyrics are truly even better live, so make sure to keep an eye out on Charlie’s socials for any live shows following this release. Stream Back To Earth wherever you get your music.
